Rumman Chowdhury works on the part of AI most consultancies skip: whether a deployed system behaves as claimed, and how you would know. She led the Machine Learning Ethics, Transparency and Accountability team at Twitter, where she ran what is generally described as the technology industry’s first algorithmic bias bounty — paying outsiders to find flaws in a live system.
She is CEO and co-founder of Humane Intelligence, a public benefit corporation building evaluation infrastructure for generative AI, and in 2024 became the first U.S. Science Envoy for Artificial Intelligence (Knight First Amendment Institute; Oxford Internet Institute). Earlier she built the responsible-AI practice at Accenture and founded the audit startup Parity.
Her practical relevance to a business is narrower and more useful than the credentials suggest: if you are deploying a model that makes decisions about people — hiring, lending, pricing, moderation — hers is the body of work that tells you what an audit of it should actually involve. She is publicly critical of self-assessment as a governance model, which is a position, not a consensus.
