Andrew Ng is the most widely recognised name in AI education, and the reason is structural rather than promotional: he taught the Stanford machine learning course that became one of Coursera's founding courses, then co-founded Coursera itself. He remains its non-independent Chairman of the Board, a directorship he has held since October 2011 (Coursera leadership).
He was the founding lead of Google Brain and later Chief Scientist at Baidu. Today he runs three organisations at once: DeepLearning.AI, the course platform through which most working practitioners first learned the field; AI Fund, a venture studio where he is Managing General Partner; and Landing AI, where he is CEO. In April 2024 he joined Amazon's board of directors.
He writes The Batch, a weekly letter to the DeepLearning.AI list, and it is where his positions get argued about rather than merely reported. He has used it consistently to push back on the framing that frontier AI poses an extinction-level risk, and to argue that regulation aimed at model development rather than applications would entrench incumbents. That is a contested position, not a settled one — it is his stated opinion, and a substantial part of the research community disagrees with it. If you are hiring for AI strategy, his material is the cheapest possible way to calibrate what is realistic, whether or not you share his view on the policy question.
