Independent consultant · Creator of the Instructor library · formerly Meta and Stitch Fix

What they are known for

Jason Liu specialises in the single most common way company AI projects disappoint: retrieval. Most business AI is some form of “answer questions over our documents”, most of those systems retrieve the wrong documents, and the visible symptom is a model that seems to hallucinate when in fact it was handed the wrong context. He works on that specific failure.

Notable public work

He built multimodal retrieval and recommendation systems at Meta and Stitch Fix before going independent, and now consults for startups on retrieval systems (his own site). He created Instructor, a widely-used open-source Python library for getting structured output out of language models, and teaches Systematically Improving RAG Applications.

What is being said publicly

He belongs on this list for a specific and checkable reason rather than a reputational one: the open-source library is public, widely adopted, and its quality can be judged directly by anyone who can read code — which is a firmer credential than a client list. Course-attendee affiliations quoted on the marketing pages are self-reported.
